Do you like to communicate with both the bride and groom, or is it better to have one of them as the main contact? Is it a help or a hindrance if family and friends become involved in the planning?

Usually I have one main contact, either the groom or the bride, who speaks for both of them… except in female maters such as hair, make up … floral design. Then the bride ALWAYS takes the lead.

If family gets involved I ask the couple to let me know in which matters I should consider their opinions (not always the bride approves of the mothers opinion for example… then I just need to know from the bride how to handle it). Of course, all issues are handled in a positive way as we know how delicate these matters can be within families. If the bride does not want to confront certain family members then she should not… just let us handle it for her and nobody will be offended. Yes, a wedding planner should often act as psychologist too!

I am always happy to deal with both the bride and the groom. I tend to find that each deals with their own areas of the planning and therefore there is often a new key person for each planning stage. Family are welcome to get in touch. Of course there are times when too many cooks can be a hindrance but provided the planner is not copied in vast numbers of discussion emails (and is only presented with the outcomes) this is ok.

I do know wedding planners who have a no parent policy and do not feel this is unreasonable.

Over the years we have noticed that dealing with grooms is more straightforward than with brides. Grooms have the ability, as any man, to detach from the planning and clearly answer with short emails and to the point.

A Bride, as any woman, who has dreamt about her wedding for a long time can become nervous when it is comes time to make things happens. They want it to be perfect but they don’t have the knowledge or skills to make it happen, just yet. They tend to be more indecisive than the groom.

We don’t have any preferences so we are happy to deal with the bride or the groom. One suggestion, for the sake of the planning, is to appoint either the bride or groom to deal with the wedding planner rather than do it separately, as the planning can go out of control, if the wedding planner agrees something with the groom and the groom forgets to tell the bride or vice versa (it happens more often than you think!)

Definitely, never involve the family with your planner or wedding planning…it could be catastrophic.

It is great to hear from both the bride and groom, or just one of them, it doesn’t really matter. If friends and family become involved in the planning then things normally get more confusing. I do discourage friends and family from getting involved as I believe that it is the Bride and Groom’s day and that they should make all the decisions.
