choosing the perfect
wedding dress for abroad

There are no magical formulas or special rules when it comes to choosing a wedding dress for abroad.

Choose the perfect wedding dress to wear abroad.

By choosing to have your wedding abroad you have opened up even more possibilities for the type of wedding dress you can wear.

Not only can you choose from the more traditional styles you can also go for a simple, sleek and sophisticated wedding dress that is completely designed around your chosen destination. With a wedding dress to wear abroad you have the opportunity to be a little more adventurous and creative.

There really are no boundaries with a wedding abroad. If you choose a wedding dress to wear abroad that suits your personality and the style of your wedding you will look and feel sensational.

A wedding abroad is also convenient for guests and immediate members of the family to embark on one of those memorable family holidays we so cherish.

When choosing your wedding dress I would offer the following advice:

  1. Don't let the fact that you're getting married abroad dictate your choice of dress

Choosing a wedding dress is a long awaited and highly emotional decision that should provide its own fond memories for you to treasure for years to come.

Make sure you choose a dress you love, one that will make you feel beautiful on what is a very special day. Don't choose your wedding dress solely on the basis you are getting married abroad.

  2. But remember you are getting married abroad

Okay, a contradictory statement but when choosing your wedding dress for abroad give a quick thought to the style of your wedding and how practical your wedding dress will be, both to transport and wear at your wedding destination.

A more traditional wedding dress may tie in beautifully with your surroundings if you are getting married in a French Chateau but a stylish knee length dress with bare feet may be perfect for a beach wedding.

If you don't care about practicality and just want to wear the dress of your dreams, I say go for it.

Alternatively, think how comfortable you will be in your dress and the climate of the host country. You want to wear it effortlessly and easily, for it to feel perfect in every way.

The best person is speak with is your wedding dress shop or designer. They may be able to make some design alterations to make your wedding dress for abroad more practical and suggest fabrics that will suit the climate of your wedding destination.

Hot Tips

Most airlines will allow you to take your wedding dress on the plane as hand luggage. However before you travel I would suggest you contact your airline personally to find out their policy on transporting your wedding dress for abroad.

I would highly recommend you take your wedding dress on board as hand luggage as there's no point risking loss or damage by entrusting it to the airline if you don't have to.

The major airline carriers will generally hang your wedding dress in the first class cabin wardrobe for you, space permitting.

Budget carriers on the other hand often do not have hanging space and you may be required to put your wedding dress in the overhead lockers. This was the case when I travelled with Ryanair.

Depending on the policy of the airline you will be travelling with, you should consider whether a plastic cover or a storage box would be the best way to transport your wedding dress. Also speak with your wedding dress shop or designer for their advice on the best way to transport your wedding dress for abroad.

If you find your wedding dress becomes slightly creased during transportation find a local dry cleaner to steam your wedding dress or if you are staying in a hotel they should provide this service.

Alternatively in warmer, more humid, climates creases may come out naturally with the weather.

Zoe who married in Cyprus wore a beautiful bodice and skirt from Carol Li's Veromia range. Her bodice with intricate embroidery and diamantes had a sweetheart neck line and button up back. Zoe's skirt although traditional looking was very light to wear and had beautiful draped chiffon over netting.
