The legal requirements for getting married in Grenada are relatively simple and straightforward.

The following information is intended to be a starting point and guideline only.

Legality of Marriage
Marriages performed in Grenada are internationally recognised and legally binding.



Residency Requirements
To get married in Grenada you must be a resident on the island for a minimum of three days before submitting an application for a marriage license.



Marriage License
Once you have been in Grenada for three days you can submit an application for a marriage license. This is done in person at the Prime Minister’s Office. At this time you are also required to pay the associated stamp duty and license fees. As indicated below, these fees are relatively inexpensive and must be paid in East Caribbean dollars (please note that these fees may be subject to change):


EC $10 Marriage Licence Fee
(payable at the Treasury, Ministry of Finance)

EC $15 Stamp
(provided along with the marriage licence application and licence fee, to the Prime Minister’s Office)

EC $2 Registration Search Fee
(Payable at the Registry General’s Office)

EC $5 Stamp
(provided to the Registry General’s Office, for placement on the Certified Marriage Certificate)

Please note that the opening hours of most Government offices 8am to 4pm from Monday to Friday. They are closed on Public Holidays and Weekends.

In general, marriage license applications are processed in two working days. However if either the bride or groom has been married previously this may take slightly longer as your documents will need to be sent to The Ministry of Legal Affairs for processing.



Required Documentation
Original or certified copies of the following documentation is required when applying for a marriage license in Grenada. Please note that all documentation must be in English. If the original papers are in another language they will need to be translated into English and certified.


  • Valid Passports
  • Birth Certificates
  • If one of the parties is divorced, proof of a Decree Absolute
  • Proof of Single Status: an affidavit, or a letter from a clergyman, lawyer, or Registry on official letterhead attesting to the fact that the parties involved have not been married previously.
  • If a name has been changed by Deed Poll proof is necessary
  • If either party has been widowed, a Death Certificate is needed
  • If either party is under 21 evidence of parental consent is required in the form of an affidavit


Marriage Certificate
All couples getting married in Grenada will be provided with a certified marriage certificate. This can be collected from the following address:
